Stair Climbing Test

Fellow blog writer Tony (One Regular Guy Writing about Food, Exercise and Living Past 100) wrote this fascinating post: Test your heart health by climbing up stairs. Dr. Jesús Peteiro, a cardiologist wanted an easy field test for cardiovascular health so he created one based on stair climbing. By comparing outcomes of the stair test with lab workout results, he identified your remain in great cardiovascular health if you can climb four flights of stairs in 60 sec or less. If it takes you 90 secs or more, you may wish to consult a physician.

I could do the 2 flights of stairs in my 2 story home two times in less than 30 secs, however thats 4 flights up and two down. To do that I had to use the outdoors stairs at a regional apartment structure:

At the bottom of Tonys post there are links to associated posts on why stair climbing is excellent for you. There are an overall of five of them, and they are all terrific. If, like Tony, you live in a high rise, you have a ready made stair difficulty. But even if you live in a “vertically-challenge” town like mine (few buildings more than two stories) you can still find some stairs. Theres our 4 story downtown parking garage and some apartment. If Im doing it a lot I use the parking garage so I do not trouble the house renters.

Stair climbing is a good workout thats one of the few activities of day-to-day living that forces us to use more intensity. If you have any joint constraints you can limit the impact by taking the stairs up and the elevator down if ones offered.

I took the stairs one at a time due to the fact that a couple of months ago I exacerbated my piriformis muscle doing stairs 2 at a time. It took me 23 secs so Im pleased to have actually passed Dr. Peteiros test.
